As the digital age collapses on humanity, society splinters into isolated cubes, each person inhabiting their own room, their own city, their own curated world. Human beings face the paradox created by the conflict between the longing for connection and social anxiety. Technology offers an alternative, evolving from early facilitator to form connections between real individuals to sophisticated virtual AI companionship. As a result, social interactions that were once deeply rooted in one another’s presence and emotional nuance are increasingly redirected into artificial spaces. This shift has raised questions about the nature of intimacy, authenticity, and the human need for connection, particularly its role in navigating hardships like grieving.
Jo Ngo’s latest painting series is a response to this new reality, exploring how contemporary individuals seek guidance and companionship in a time when technology is often more available than other people.

Jo Ngo’s latest painting series is a response to this new reality, exploring how contemporary individuals seek guidance and companionship in a time when technology is often more available than other people. Created in solitude in a suburban landscape where grass still grows wild among unfinished luxury homes, her work is both personal and symbolic. Drawing inspiration from AI-assisted tarot readings and fairy tale motifs, the figures in her paintings embody The Fool’s many facets: the naïve seeker, the wounded traveler, and ultimately, the integrated soul who has come to understand that wholeness is not the absence of pain, but the courage to embrace all of its parts.

Each canvas carries the spirit of a journey: Jo’s protagonists step into unknown worlds with no promise of arrival, unaware of the wounds they may bear along the way. Despite their own vulnerability and the uncertainty of the future, they wander through the woods and row under a burnt bridge symbolizing pain. Guided only by curiosity and an instinct to keep moving forward, these protagonists find their way slowly to new, brighter futures.
Jo’s protagonists, however, rarely journey alone. Instead, they are guided and supported by others, even when those “others” are abstract or imaginary. Whimsical myth-like characters populate these scenes as emotional guardians. These characters illustrate The Fool’s companions along the way as symbols of resilience, intuition, and the unseen support we find in surprising corners of the world. They reflect a long-standing truth in human connections: meaningful relationships are essential to one’s growth. Without these supports, The Fool would not complete their journey. In the closing rhythm of The Fool’s journey, Jo’s work embodies hope – not as escape, but as earned lightness.
Tarot, folklore, and AI converge, not as gimmicks, but as symbolic tools – guides that offer self-reflection rather than instruction.

As AI increasingly mimics human conversation and begins to fill emotional voids, the series also presents a quiet caution: the risk of substituting genuine human interaction with artificial companionship grows. Although an AI chatbot may offer kind words and an illusion of companionship, it cannot replicate the warmth of a physical touch, the heartfelt energy of genuine empathy, or the silent understanding of a shared glance. While machines may respond, they do not feel. The intimacy they offer is limited by algorithms and responses based on pattern recognition.
Jo’s paintings remind us that while we may continue to coexist with technology, the beauty of human connection – all of its sacredness, its wholeness in its imperfection, and its capacity for transformation – remains irreplaceable. The series is a powerful call to look inward: to find our inner strength, to cherish our connections with others, and to find the courage to fight for what truly matters.
