console.log(“bon voyage”); A Solo Exhibition by Jo Ngo marks Jo Ngo’s first solo exhibition featuring paintings, a new beginning after a long journey. It represents the start of Jo’s exploration, tracing back to humanity’s most primal gestures and subconscious acts of storing data, self-expression, and communication with others through drawing. This process often requires physical interaction—between the hand and the brush, the brush scooping paint and spreading it thick or thin on the surface. Beyond these micro-actions, the body’s engagement in this process demands deep mental focus. The canvas strips down the artist’s mind, allowing viewers to dissect it as if reading a diary, but with color, composition, and characters woven into a single frame.
By contrast, algorithmic dialogue operates through patterns and probabilities: chatbots recombine language from vast shared archives. They do not use knowledge to express themselves, generate new insights, or craft responses that provoke beautiful thoughts. Each user’s question is merely a request broken into known keywords, cast into a vast pool of collective memory from other users. Often, the bot answers from its own archive; sometimes, it reaches outward, retrieving fragments from distant sources. The reply that emerges is not just an answer but an echo of paths already taken by others.
While this is merely the tip of the iceberg, highlighting the irony of the satisfaction derived from the physical act of creation and the necessity of supportive human connections in contrast to ever-available chatbots. The title borrows the logic of programming, it also embraces the warmth of the common wish to bid farewell before a journey, any journey.
